The UP Open University’s Committee on Gender Concerns held a “Gender Sensitivity Training” and “Seminar on Anti-Sexual Harassment” on 18 August 2014 at the CCDL Auditorium, UPOU Headquarters, Los Baños, Laguna.

The first part of the event is the “Gender Sensitivity Training.” Dr. Melinda F. Lumanta, UPOU Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Chair on Gender Concerns, encouraged the UPOU community to be gender sensitive and create a violent-free environment for the faculty, staff and students. Assistant Professor Finaflor Taylan, Program Development Associate (PDA) for Gender Concerns, served as the speaker for the said training, which aimed to break the stereotypes of the sexes and provide an equalized perspective on the privileges of men and women in the different sectors of our community.

The second part was a seminar on anti-sexual harassment. Atty. Rowena S. Disini, Chief of the Legal Office, together with Ms. Maria Ofelia S. Leaño, a senior student at the UP College of Law, served as the speakers for this forum. They discussed Republic Act 7877, which is an act declaring sexual harassment against women unlawful in the employment, education or training environment. This is the first act on sexual harassment in Asia and was passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate in 1995. Another law discussed was the CSC Resolution 091-0940, which defines the administrative offense of sexual harassment and prescribes the standard procedure for the administrative investigation and resolution of sexual harassment cases in the public sector. They also presented UP’s Implementing Rules and Regulations of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act of 1995, which specifies the policy, scope and charges against sexual harassment in the university.

Officials, faculty, staff, and students of the university attended the training and seminar. Earlier this year, the Committee on Gender Concerns conducted the “Life Begins @40” and the “Men’s Health.” (Criscelle Moya)
