MAIKLING PELIKULA
Headline
Juan Carlos Ojano

During the course of one night, a young journalist is set to finish his investigative report that will expose the private army of an influential religious group. His work is interrupted by an e-mail from his source informing him about the recent conflicts inside the church, urging him to listen to three audio files containing confessions of members from the said religious group.

HEADLINE uses Louis Althusser’s theory of ideology, focusing on how the repressive (government) and the ideological (religious institution) are strongly connected in upholding the status quo. The film also delves on how a religious institution can both act as an ideological and repressive state apparatus.

JUAN CARLOS OJANO is an alumnus of the UP Film Institute. He graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Film last June 2016. He started shooting home videos and making short films for school at the age of ten while he started his own film blog at the age of fourteen.

Upon entering UP Diliman, he has made several short films. His short film Sa Pag-uwi (Coming Home), a drama entirely in sign language, won the Jury Prize in the Black Beret Undergraduate Student Showcase on May 2015.

His thesis film Headline was awarded the Special Mention in Narrative – Film during the UP College of Mass Communication Graduation Rites 2016. It was also the Best Editing winner at the Indie Un-Film Festival 2017 held at De La Salle University-Manila.
The film has also been screened at the 28th CCP Independent Film & Video Festival, 2nd Asia Youth Indie Film Festival, 4th Salamindanaw Asian Film Festival, and Active Vista Human Rights Festival 2017.

MAIKLING PELIKULA is a program featuring outstanding and award-winning short films. Likewise to be featured will be a discussion and annotation by the director-filmmaker. The program will highlight the experimental and narrative genres of film.
